Wow! What a brilliant shot! :notworthy: And just Look at the nose on that sukka! I love it!

Shrews are harmless but enigmatic little f*ckers, aren't they? When I was a youngster I often used to pass through this small thicket. Pretty well publicly trampled sort of place. I got to thinking next to nothing of finding perfectly alright, yet perfectly dead shrews on the thin tracks there. Never could or have figured out what killed them.

In fact, one of the enduring highlights of my entire life will always be the time when a mate and I stood and watched a Water Shrew come out and do his thing on a small pond in the middle of a fir plantation while we were trapping and surveying Great Crested Newts there. (Yeppers; I had a licence ;)) First and last Water Shrew I ever seen and it truly was a wonderful experience. I felt like I was living in a David Attenborough film!

Had a couple of the smaller shrews in the mouse traps inside my cottage here before now. Breaks my heart to pop open a box and find a innocent little shrew in there :(

How'd ye come to catch that one alive, mate?

When i was a mad-keen barbel angler i would often be on the river from dawn til dusk. Fishing the same swim meant many things occured on a regular basis. One of the best was a tiny shrew that i would throw cubes of luncheon meat to. I guess he would come within 4 foot of me to pick up the meat and scuttle off. What a beautiful animal.

First saw a water shrew when i was about 6 or 7, remember it exactly and could take you straight back to the spot now on a small stream. My father and i watched the shrew in the water for perhaps ten seconds before it dissapeared. It was a truely awesome sight for me. I have spent a little while each year since sat on the little foot bridge just downstream from where that shrew was , hoping for another glimpse. Sadley i fear the water quality has declined too much for the little critters to survive.

Top piccy, thanks for sharing it. JD

Drops; I wonder if they have that taste in common with moles then? My old mate, Chris H. tried to sample pretty much anything out there. I'll never forget the expression on his face when he recounted the taste of " The little muscle men ". They truly disgusted him.

Come to think of it; Similar diet ..... :hmm:
